2024- Research project: "Innovative processes for the valorization of agro-food industry waste", at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Materials, Environment (scientific-disciplinary sector ICHE-02/B). “The project aims to develop advanced technologies for the recovery and valorization of agro-food waste. These residues are rich in bioactive compounds such as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates and dietary fibers. The main objective of the project is to maximize the extraction of these compounds using innovative and sustainable techniques, such as ultrasound and microwave-assisted extraction. These technologies allow to significantly reduce processing times, while improving energy efficiency and minimizing environmental impact. The project is part of the Rome Technopole Innovation Ecosystem, funded by the European Union under the PNRR. The project focuses on the optimization of extraction processes, with particular attention to sustainability. The initiative is part of Spoke 6, Open Research Infrastructures, and Flagship 3, which promote the digital transition in waste decarbonization and recycling processes, with the aim of developing innovative technological solutions". - phD Luca Masiello (luca.masiello@uniroma1.it)
2023- Research project: "Accident analysis and identification of the main risks in the logistics chain of the battery waste cycle" at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Materials, Environment (scientific-disciplinary sector ING-IND/27). "In recent years, several incidents involving lithium-ion batteries have been reported as a source of fires and dangerous accidents. In order to manage the risk, it is necessary to identify the critical points during the entire life cycle of a lithium-ion battery. For this reason, the analysis of accidents that have occurred worldwide is of fundamental importance. The aim of this research is therefore to improve current knowledge on the factors that can trigger a fire involving lithium-ion batteries and the assessment of the main risks associated with the transportation, use and storage of lithium-ion batteries. This would allow the improvement of specific prevention measures to reduce the risk of fire and explosion during their use and storage or the improvement of safety procedures for the management of accidents involving lithium batteries. In this regard, an in-depth analysis of accidents that occurred not only during the normal use of batteries, but also in storage facilities, during transportation and during battery disposal will be conducted".
